It's not that important but...

The Daily Express, Exaggerating for Effect.

August 19, 2011

Now, I’m not a fan of the Daily Express but even by their standards there is an article in the paper today that could best be described as misleading. The headline on the top right hand side of the front page reads “Outrage as police spend £82m on translators for foreign criminals”.

Firstly can I point out to the Express that there is an online thesaurus so they can look up, for free, words that mean the same as “outrage” but are different from “outrage” which seems to appear on their front page at least twice a week. This is, of course, not the only problem with the article; it is a deliberate distortion of the truth in an attempt to stir up racial tension.

The sub-headline, if that is the correct term, is “That would put 3,542 Officers on the Beat”. Well that, context free, claim is worth checking out. I'm sure there are other things that police forces spend money on that could be described in such a way, how much, for instance, do police forces spend on cars? Or car maintenance? Or petrol? There are alternatives you know. In my day the police got by just using there bikes. Do they describe the money that is spent on this, also, essential service in the same terms? Of course they don't. It's as if they are deliberately taking something that involves non-English speakers and making a fuss about it because it involves non-English speakers. Surely there must be more to it that because if it was just that then that would be petty racism and I'm sure that they wouldn't do that? Well let's have a look.

When you have a look at the article on the website, and I strongly suggest that you don't, the headline now reads “Police Spend £82million Talking to Migrants”, so they have already backed away from their original claim. No longer “foreign criminals” as originally claimed but now “migrants”.

Some would wonder whether this semantic difference is important, well yes it is. It has gone from people who have done something wrong, although they are still entitled to a fair trial which I would assume understanding what they had been charged with and making sure that they are fairly questioned, to anyone questioned at all that doesn't speak English as a first language and lives here. Well that seems a little rude. Read past the headlines and it becomes “foreign criminals, victims and witnesses who do not speak English”, so anyone who has come into contact with the police whose English is not so great. This will inlcude people reporting crime and witnesses, these are the people who the Express thinks shouldn't be talking to the police because it may cost some money. What an odd idea.

How about that figure of £82 million. From the headline you would assume that it was for a year, is it? Umm, no. It is, according to the article, over 3 years. This headline is a total lie isn't it?

So back to that figure of 3,542 police on the streets talked about in the sub-headline, is that for one year as would be a reasonable persons insinuation? Again no, it's over 3 years.

So, that headline again is “Outrage as police spend £82m on translators for foreign criminals”. What it should really read is “Police spend £82m on making sure that people whose first language isn't English are able to help them with their inquires, get a fair trial or report an offense. Oh and over 3 years.

This story is pretty formulaic for the Express though, it even contains a quote from an organization whose motto is, I assume, “Will be outraged for money”, the Tax Payers' Alliance. Which tax payers' do they think they represent? It certainly isn't anyone that I know.

A quick competition then, can we guess the quote, the story is about translation services, go on, give it a go, it really isn't that hard. Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “The taxpayer has a right to expect someone residing in Britain to learn to speak English.” TWAT!!!!! What if the person mugged is here on holiday? Should they only be allowed to report the crime if they describe their attacker in full sentences without using the phrase “how you say.....”? When you holiday in Tuscany, as I assume you do, would you be able to say, in the necessary detail, what happened to you if you gang raped by a herd of marauding Wild Bore? Well would you? If not then you should not expect justice.

The article even says that it is only $1.5million per force, so not that much then but still they feel the need to be outraged.

This is a non-story which has had it's context removed and has been exaggerated with the sole intent of stirring up racial hatred with the Express' readership. Add a headline that is, essentially a lie, and the job is done. Well done all round.

Some Of The Players Seem Familiar.

July 19, 2011

I know that I am not the first person to say that Rebekah Brooks looks like Side-Show Bob from the Simpsons but it's not just the hair there are other similarities, their self belief, surprising large feet and they both want to kill children.

But can we extend this further? Can we involve other players from the News International/News of the World Drama? I think we can.

Human punch bag and seemingly unrepentant former NotW Paul McMullan, for instance, reminds me of Gill Gunderson. Not just the...

News Of The World "Scandal", What Will Change?

July 9, 2011
This is the script from today's DORC podcast, if you can't be bothered to read this you can listen to it here.

And so the rhetoric from people who didn't care last week has started. David Cameron said it was "disgusting", Rupert Murdoch went with "deplorable and unacceptable". Ed Milliband decided to become defender of the people and managed to call for a public enquiry without repeating the same phrase 5 times in a row. Bo...

War on Drugs Has Been "Hugely Successful" Claim Columbian Narcos

June 5, 2011
The global war on drugs has been “remarkable successful” according to a new report by a group of South American politicians (all of whom deny any links with the drugs trade, honest) and Afghan Police (ditto).

Their report makes the point that the anti-drug policy has succeeded by fuelling organised crime, costing taxpayers millions of dollars and causing thousands of deaths.

They highlight UN estimates that opiate use increased 35% worldwide from 1998 to 2008, cocaine by 27% and cannabi...

Lady Gaga

May 27, 2011

This is the script for a piece that appears in today's Pod Delusion podcast.

I wrote a blog post a while ago about why I dislike the concept of “guilty pleasures”. In it I said that if you are describing to a psychiatrist, whilst you are detained in a secure mental hospital how, after murdering someone, you masturbate like a horny monkey thinking about what you have done, then that could quite legitimately be described as a “guilty pleasure”, liking a 3 minute pop song by Boney M, le...

Oh It's a Good Day.

May 14, 2011

Whilst most of my days are pretty good, it would be churlish to moan about tiny specific items, today is turning out to be a particularly good one.

First up it is a lovely day here in Dorset, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. My Ipod has just played Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins and then Funny Little Frog by Belle and Sebastian. Both of these are great songs guaranteed to raise the corners of my mouth but combine them with a sunny day and even the Mona Lisa will be forced into...

And So It Returns!!!!!

May 10, 2011

Conspiracy theories used to the preserve of the deepest corners of the interwebs, being “discussed” on message boards that you really had to look very hard to find. It used to be all Aliens and the Elders of Zion (which has been shown over and over again (particularly well in David Aaronovitch's book Voodoo Histories might I add) to based on a work of fiction, it's not true, the Jews did not and do not have a plan to take over/control the world) but since the 60's has been a growing movem...

An EDL Counter March, Should I Stay or Should I Go?

April 25, 2011

I am in an odd situation for me, I'm not sure what to do. Whilst I can be a little indecisive looking at a menu, this is because I am choosing from many nice things, I don't usually have a problem in deciding how I want to spend my Saturdays. This Saturday, April 30th, however is different. Let me give you some background.

A few weeks ago a documentary was shown on BBC3 called “My brother the Muslim” in which the film maker Robb Leech spoke to his step-brother who had converted to ...

You Knead To Have Patience (That is a pun you know)

April 24, 2011

Let this be a lesson to you, if things take a lot of time, let them take a lot of time. Some things cannot by hurried. The best things come to those who wait, patience is a virtue and so on and so forth. What I am basically saying is yes, the 3 minute pop song is fantastic (oh yes it really is, hell one of the best ever tunes is “Highly Evolved” by The Vines and that's under 2 minutes) but sometimes it takes a little longer to express an idea.

I had a surprise day off on Thursday and ...

A Response to the Pod Delusion

April 8, 2011

I'm just catching up on some of my podcast listening and have just enjoyed the Pod Delusion from April 1st, it was episode 78. Well, I enjoyed most of it, one of the pieces made me, almost, unbearably sad. The article is by Salim Fadhley and it is an interview with comedian Roy Zimmerman. They discussed a man called Ted Haggard who, for those who don't know, is an American evangelical pastor who has, in the past, said so...
