Now I will be the first to admit that I am not the biggest Weymouth. A significant number of it's residents that do nothing but complain and have therefore lead to the council not being brave enough to do anything interesting or exciting for the town. They have allowed it to remain exactly as it was in 1983. They have touched up the faded glamour and have just painted over the rusting cracks. They had traffic going nowhere and buildings that weren't designed as much as copied from the packaging of whatever breakfast cereal was had that morning. It was a dying town but then something happened.

Far away in that big and scary London Sebastian Coe was, single handedly as is my understanding, trying to win the Olympics for the country. Weymouth and Portland was included in this bid, the sailing would be here and it would be great. Our bid was successful, which was nice.

This finally meant that there was money for the long awaited new road between Weymouth and Dorchester. It would be built. When it was finished it would take 5-10 minutes of the journey off of an 8 mile or so trip. Did this make Weymouth people happy when it was completed? Nope, not really. They found things to complain about.

The traffic in the town centre was always a disaster. Anything more than 3 cars in the town and they all ground to a halt. So the council now had the money and the impetus to do something about it. Did the people of this seaside town say “thank goodness that something is happening that might be a little difficult in the short term but will lead to a longer term advantage, good work all.”, umm no. Yet more complaining. Weymouth people fear change.

Weymouth council have been quite stubborn and have carried on and this is a good thing.

We haven't been there for a few months but today, in between the showers, we headed for the front. Well, my my, what a pleasant experience that was. There are lovely new buildings all along the beach.

There is a large new café with a nice decking area. It is called the Boat and you can see why, the shape of the building is reminiscent of an upturned boat and decking area echoes the shipping theme, shaped, as it is, like a bow.

All new bus stops with a sailing motif and street lamps. The falling down shacks that used to sell ice creams and chips have now been either nicely repaired and repainted or completely rebuilt and replaced with new little kiosks for the selling of remarkable similar unhealthy snacks.

All looking pretty good if you ask me.

It is not often you will here my saying this but well done Weymouth, all is looking rather lovely although I'm pretty sure you will still manage to find plenty of people in your town to moan about it, my advice to you is to ignore them, they will be no help as you try and bring your town into the 21st century.
