Allotment 10/4/11

Posted by Martyn Norris on Sunday, April 10, 2011, In : Allotment
So we were sat on Poundbury Hillfort yesterday (which you can read about, as well as some other things, here) and we were wondering how they calculate when Easter is. One of the reason for this thought was potatoe related. When are you supposed to put potatoes in the ground? On Good Friday I'm lead to believe but that is different every year and is therefore, as a immoveable date in the calender, of no help. If Easter is the most important Christian festival (as most say it is) then why doesn...

Allotment 21/7/10

Posted by Martyn Norris on Wednesday, July 21, 2010,
Last year I grew potatoes in a bag, I think I may have mentioned it, and my crop wasn’t very good. This year I grow them in the ground so that I could compare the 2 crops. Ok, this wasn’t super scientific as I should have grown them at the same time, next to each other and treated them the same but it will have to do.

Quick! The sun is out! Get outside and do stuff!

As you may have guessed I got to the allotment and, finally, got those seeds in that I wanted to last week. Just to remind you, this is my attempt to grow early salad leaves and radishes under plastic cloches. I think it will work just fine as a few plants that were covered have survived the winter here. Yes I know that my winter wasn’t as bad as yours, I had much less snow, ...

Allotment 4/8/09

Posted by Martyn Norris on Tuesday, August 4, 2009,
I will try and blog about the allotment as much as I can but, to be honest, not that much happens from week to week.

Yesterday I lifted potatoes from the potato bags and and my onions.
My potato crop was a little poor but Significant Other and I don't that many so hopefully they will last us for a while. We are storing them in hessian bags which I have attached to the wall, see

With onions you have to lift them out of the ground and then leave them on the surface to dry for a couple of days.U...
